52 Rolls – Roll #5 (Q04R01)

OK, I completely dropped the ball on my 52 Rolls Project. I set out at the start of the year with a plan to shoot at least a roll of film each week and share the results of one roll here. I even had a structure to it. But little did I know at the time, when I was beginning my 27th year living in Taiwan, that I would soon fall in love and move back to the United States, landing in the Berkeley, California area… Not only did all the planning occupy my time, but I packed away all my film processing gear and sent it over the ocean to California. Only recently have I retrieved some of my camera and film, processing reels and tanks, and set up my scanner, freeing me to resume shooting film on this side of the world. So for this post, which I can’t promise will really resume the series, I present images made with a c. 1956 Canon VIT Deluxe, a Leica thread mount (LTM or L39) rangefinder, coupled with a Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 lens. In brief: Camera: Canon VT DeLuxe rangefinder (Leica Thread Mount) Lens: Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5 Film: Kodak Tmax 100 (expired 2001, cold stored) Exposure: Rated at 50 EI Processing: HC110 (dilution B) for 8:30 at 21 deg. C. Scanner: Epson Perfection V550 The images were made while wandering around my new environs, from Emeryville to Berkeley Marina, on foot and on bicycle. 雨中的詹瑩 | Into the Rain with Joy

Joy and I have known each other since last November, when I photographed the National Taiwan University EMBA triathlon club at a race in Taidong. Although still an undergraduate at NTU, she was assisting some club members with their swimming, and like many of the team members she participated in her first Olympic-distance triathlon that day. We’d long discussed arranging some portrait sessions, and after many attempts to clear our schedules finally got together in May for an outdoor session. Apart from a few rough ideas we went into that first session just looking to see how it would go, and I used film cameras for most of the images. Joy’s mom came along for moral support and wardrobe and styling assistance, and my assistant Dennis helped with reflectors and lighting. It went well, but I’ll be sharing some of the results from that session another time. Joy and I were both inspired by the first collaboration and quickly arranged to try something more urban the following week. I immediately described to her a concept I had in mind that I had worked on around five years ago, and had wanted to revisit in a fresh way. She liked the idea, and with that in mind Joy, her mom and me met in the mid afternoon on a weekday in mid-May. Right at the appointed time it started pouring rain. We knew that unless we waited a long time we might not be able to shoot at the planned location, so instead of just sitting around I suggested that we look around the CKS Memorial Hall for...
Another Day with Zhenzhu

Another Day with Zhenzhu

This is the second post of images made with Zhenzhu. Part One is HERE. As a photographer it’s always a distinct pleasure to work with a subject you have a rapport with. Sometimes it doesn’t always happen right away and can take some work and a bit of faith to establish, but once that mutual trust is made it’s like having another team member to build synergy with. I think it also relaxes everything in the full confidence that what we do will result in something satisfying, and that even if it doesn’t always work out it will be a fun and worthwhile collaborative effort. Zhenzhu and I have shot together several times now, as I detailed in a recent post. More recently, we journeyed to an old theme park that had been ravaged by time and devastated by typhoons, yet has been reopened to the public and, while not rebuilt or restored, is now maintained to some degree. Pressed for time, we spent just around two hours shooting, during which time I finished two rolls of Lomochrome Purple film in a Lomo LC-A 120 camera kindly lent to me by the Lomographic Society out of Hong Kong. The LC-A 120 is the world’s lightest, simplest auto exposure 120 format film camera, sporting a fairly sharp wide angle lens. The only setting the user can control is film ISO. This review pretty much puts all of the camera’s features, advantages, and drawbacks into perspective. Zhenzhu and I have shot in the studio and outdoors in many locations in the attempt to capture her sportiness, charm, vibrant...

Instant Slow with Yang Chin |

Earlier this year Fujifilm made a backdoor announcement that the company would no longer produce FP-100C instant peel-apart film, the only remaining instant peel-apart film for use in Polaroid Land cameras and film backs on various medium and large format cameras. The news triggered a wave of nostalgia, anger, regret, disappointment and sorrow among many photographers, myself included, as well as a buying frenzy as people scrambled to snatch up as much of the beautiful film as they could afford. I personally didn’t join the fray this time, but as a veteran of the previous discontinuation of FP-3000B, a gorgeous high speed, high contrast black and white film that miraculously has very little grain, I have a freezer filled with it. In among the 30-plus boxes of my remaining stock of FP-3000B was one last box of another discontinued formula, the equally sumptuous FP-100B, a slow, grainless, high contrast black and white film with a very close look to 3000B. FP-100B。 An upcoming portrait session with the irresistible Yang Chin scheduled, which we agreed would feature mostly black and white film and some use of my Linhof Technika IV 4×5 format camera, I decided it would be an excellent time to finish my last box of FP-100B. Ten exposures and poof! Some may say it is overkill, or too much camera for film that was essentially used “back in the day” for proofing. But as a big fan of Fujifilm’s black and white pack films, I emphatically disagree. How could drawing out and capturing Yang Chin’s beauty, wit, and her sweet, easy smile ever be a waste...

A Day With Zhenzhu (Pt. 1)

Zhenzhu is a runner and a single mother with an infectious smile, great sense of humor, and positive attitude. In conceiving our portrait session we wanted to capture some of her quirkiness, youthfulness, humor and beauty, while incorporating a hint of her athleticism and passion for running.   With styling and makeup completed first thing in the morning, this took us to several locations from mid-morning through early evening. We then added a fairly quick studio session of active lifestyle portraits (not shown here). This is the first series of selections, with more stylized and formal images to come. 待續。。。 To be continued…
