Dream Wedding in Kenting

The wedding of Joshua Marc Colp and Esther Scarlet Shih (施亞岑)took place in the seaside resort area of Kenting, Taiwan in early January. This was a special occasion for  many reasons. Among them, the concept of destination weddings is relatively unfamiliar in Taiwan, where most weddings are held close to home and in fact right inside the families’ homes before a banquet is given at a nearby hotel or restaurant. In addition, it was the union of an American groom and Taiwanese bride, so the groom’s immediate relatives and even some old friends made the trip all the way to Taiwan for the occasion. Even for local Taiwanese, attending a wedding on the southern tip of the island, over four hours from where most of the couple’s friends and family reside, was a major event. But the festivities didn’t disappoint. The setting, at the luxurious Chateau seaside resort, was spectacular, and despite some stiff breeze the weather couldn’t have been nicer (meanwhile, it was raining the entire time in Taipei). After the bride made her entrance, the ceremony on the beach, presided by Reverend Tim Lee, had people alternately in stitches and tears. The couple exchanged humorous and deeply heartfelt vows as waves lapped the beach and the sun disappeared over the horizon, bathing the celebrants in dreamy warm light. After a few quick family pictures and one with the couple on a beachside hammock with the entire wedding party looking on, everyone headed inside to the banquet room for dinner and dancing. The banquet featured first-class cuisine, more moving tributes, a cracking...

The Last Days of Huaguang Village

Something Xtra – On Multiple Exposures (英文)

Something Xtra – On Multiple Exposures (英文)

Recently I have found myself gravitating towards several different means of expression in photography, including a prevalence of black and white, but most notably being drawn to making multiple exposures. There are many kinds of multiple exposures, and many ways to approach creating them. Alone, on film, on digital cameras that have multiple exposure settings, or in post-production – either in the darkroom or using Photoshop. I’ve played around with most of these techniques, with the exception of collaborative multiple exposures, which I’d love to try. In Camera (on film) I’ve always made multiple exposures on film. Part of the interest and fascination in laying one image over the other is similar to shooting on film itself, in that you don’t know how it will come out until the film is processed. With multiple exposures the element of certitude is reduced that much further, as overlaying one image over the other without being able to see how they’ll combine is fairly imprecise. Still, in spite of the uncertainty, many accomplished photographers are adept at making double and multiple exposures. Collaborative  Especially since the advent of the Internet and various forums and social media networks it has been a popular activity for group members to collaborate on double/multiple exposures. The first person makes exposures on a clean roll, then rewinds the film and sends the film (and sometimes the film and camera together) to the second person, who then shoots over the first set of images. There are many ways people work together on double/multiple exposures, such as one making portraits and the other shooting textures and patterns, or one shooting flowers or billowy clouds...
Yannick & Tina’s Wedding

Yannick & Tina’s Wedding

As a photographer in Taiwan, cross-cultural weddings are my favorite kind of weddings. Maybe it’s because  in addition to the difference in physical appearance they can encompass more unknowns, fun surprises, diverse traditions, and levity. I also revel in my role as a bilingual (and often trilingual, when addressing older members of a wedding party in the Taiwanese language when necessary or just for an extra measure of fun interaction with guests) photographer taking on directorial duties to get everyone lined up for photos at the right places and times as well as finding spontaneous moments to preserve for eternity. Yannick and Tina hired me to play that role, and all the color and excitement kept my energy level up from the moment I arrived at the gorgeous Grand Hotel first thing in the morning until I left the exquisite Garden Villa with the last guests late that night.
